Why the roots need oxygen?

I want to start a small hydroponic system to grow berries for mead. I've seen everything online states that the roots need plenty of oxygen, C02, but the plants used to produce oxygen, so why not root need C02? you would be to have an optimal Senario oxygen rich soil moist, an environment with high levels of C02 and topof much light on that?

Since the roots are embedded in the ground, unable to perform photosynthesis. But the roots are actively growing and use of energy. The best way to achieve energy is to use the sugar produced in the leaves in cellular respiration that requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The soil must have the sufficient texture (open spaces between soil particles) to allow oxygen to diffuse into the soil through the roots to absorb. If the soil becomes waterlogged the deepest roots die quickly leading to the slow death of the plant. Plants that are rooted in the bottom of steam or a lake or swamp, that have mechanisms for transporting oxygen to the roots!
