Why do I keep getting root rot my deep water culture hydroponics setup?

I have a home made setup basic hydroponics, where roots grow through a basket and eventually grow to sit in a bucket of water that bubbles of air through. the water temperature is OK, no light is reaching the roots, is about 300 ppm with plant nutrients, pH is generally in any 5,8-6,1 place all I can think of is maybe my nutrients have gone wrong, but I'm trying to eliminate all other possibilities before spending money on more nutrients.

It sounds like you need to sterilize and disinfect your system.
