If you want to plant a herb garden, you may be pleased to find that they are some of the hardiest and easiest to grow plants around. Knowing the right herb gardening tips can make your chances of success even greater. You can end up with delicious fresh herbs that you can add to your cooking to take it from plain and ordinary to flavorful and delicious.

You need to know a little about herbs. They can be annuals which need to be replanted every year. They can also be perennials which come back year after year. Some may spread like wildfire and be hard to control once they have established themselves. Others are delicate and need a little more coaxing to get started well. Knowing which is which can help contribute to the success of your herb garden.

You can plant your herb garden outdoors or, if the climate you live in is not very good, you can also grow herbs indoors. A hydroponic garden is a wonderful idea, but there is so much you need to know about set up, nutrient supplementation and proper lighting and growing techniques that you should refer to articles specifically about that. The following tips deal more with growing herbs in containers or beds.

Great gardens start with good plants. You need to find a good nursery that offers a selection of seeds or seedlings. If you are just starting, you may want to start with seedlings rather than trying to germinate your own seeds. Deciding in advance what herbs you want to plant can help you when you are confronted with a huge variety of different herbs and other edible plants.

You may want to plan your herb garden out before planting. This can help you keep a herb garden which is both beautiful and healthy. You can decide at this point whether you are interested in planting a herb garden in containers or whether you want to plant them in beds. Herbs do well in either setting which is one of the reasons why they are so easy for beginners to deal with.

When selecting the plants you will choose you need to be aware of two factors that can affect your herbs. The first is climate and the second is soil type. Climate is something you cannot do a lot about. Plants which are intended for a much warmer climate may fail to do well out of doors. They can be brought indoors and may do well that way. You can help protect herbs from cold by covering them. However, if you have a climate which is too cold during the winter, a perennial plant may not come back in the spring. Soil type can be adjusted by adding different natural additives. Having a soil assessment done may be the best thing you can do in order to guarantee the success of your garden.

Growing herbs can be easy if you keep a few of the above factors in mind. Knowing that you have healthy and delicious ingredients as close as your deck or yard can make cooking a lot more interesting. Take the time to learn more about herb gardening and you will be amazed at the success that you can enjoy.
