Ugh. My girlfriend had a hydroponic garden in our spare room. The electricity bill sucked, spent by many bottles of hydrogen peroxide lost count (to dissolve the salt build up), and all they really ended with a big mess and a lots of cherry tomatoes. By becoming a good gardener, you have to learn all you can about your soil. The reason that the pH or acidity is important and should be measured in garden soil is because it affects directly the ability to dissolve the nutrients in the soil and in turn be absorbed by plants. Without a proper pH level, some plants wilt and become ill, or simply do not reach their full potential. Many never reach maturity because they are unable to obtain the nutrients they need.
Some types of plants need a more acidic environment in which to grow than others. These include vegetables such as corn, potatoes, beans, okra, lettuce, onion, squash and chili. Watermelons and melons by contrast, require alkalinity to grow.
In the world of flower is lilies, sunflowers, some types of roses and hydrangeas do best in an acid soil. Perennials, as daffodils and tulips also need an acid environment, as well as herbs, parsley and garlic.
You're probably wondering, how can I know if my land is inclined towards being an alkali or acid composition? Good question. The best thing to do is use a home test kit that acid gives you a good idea of what the pH level in your garden can be. Factors Remember, there are many that can affect the pH of the soil, including animal and bird droppings, prior use of chemical fertilizers, and chemicals in the water table. The number of different types and forms of Juniper makes it ideal to form the backbone of a Mediterranean garden design and arid climate. Usually, when a number of types of the same plant are used together, the two principles of good design are discussed - namely, the need for unity on the one hand, and the variety in the other.
Junipers come in all shapes, form, size and even color imaginable. There Juniper trees, large shrubs for screening, shrubs growing underground and varieties of hugs.
