Herbs have been cultivated for centuries for many different purposes, as for cooking, cosmetics and candles smell, and to make use of insecticides and medications. In ancient times was usually monks and nuns and other clergy who participated in the task of treating the sick and infirm. It was also caring for these people who grew up all they need to use herbs for remedies. They created the first garden of medicinal herbs that we know.

Illuminated manuscripts that have survived through the centuries feature drawings that show what some early monastery gardens looked. Some were walled gardens with pathways separation of beds where they grow different herbs. Other gardens were surrounded by hedges created with herbs like rosemary or thorny roses, herbs carefully planted in the center.

Some witnesses also have lists and descriptions of the herbs that were planted. For example, Charlemagne, king of the Franks (also known as Charles the Great) contained the medicinal herbs in Capitulare of Villis "written in the 9th century. Among them the poppy, burdock, widely used for disease skin and that is mentioned in three of Shakespeare `s plays, marshmallow, recognized as a food and medicine, which is mentioned in the Bible and literature both in Arabic and Chinese, Clary, also known as sage, which was used by the Romans to make a kind of eyewash, and Sempervivum, a species of about 40 succulent plants of the family Crassulaceae that grow as rosettes, is another herb used to treat skin diseases. The Romans supposedly grew these herbs inside.

Charlemagne also had developed plans to expand a garden of medicinal herbs in medicine or the century, a Benedictine Monastery, 7 in Switzerland. Specific herbs, is shown in these schemes include:

- Tasty
- Iris
- Rosemary
- Fenugreek
- Sage
- Rue
- Lily

Of these, rosemary is probably the most interesting. An old garden plant, with a great legacy of the supposed mythical powers and influences in life, this sweet-smelling herbs not only is widely appreciated for its culinary uses, but has always been a symbol of love and loyalty. The ancients often included in wedding crowns. It has several medicinal uses and, among other things, is used to combat migraines and skin diseases. Helps improve poor liver function and poor circulation. It is also useful as a hair rinse for dandruff sufferers.

In the Middle Ages (in the Middle Ages), the gardens were common, especially in the palace gardens and hunting lodges belonging to the nobility. These were much more elaborate than the previous monastic gardens, but herbs including rosemary, irises, lavender daisies and property, as we see in the pictures.

In the late Middle Ages, during the 15th century, a man named Ion Gardener wrote a treatise on the Feat of Gardening and discussed different types of herbs used for seasoning, cooking and for medicinal smell. These include fennel, parsley, thyme, borage, Orach and garlic, lilies, honeysuckle and lavender, banana and toxic henbane.
