Autumn days for southern New Mexico, eastern Texas and most of the Southwest.
I've seen Raywood ash trees begin to change slightly, getting ready to bring on it for live shows burgandy purple /. Myrtle Some are beginning to show signs of yellow and orange in some of their leaves. Most are not aware that crape also emit a wonderful display of color, well fed during the summer months.
Other trees have to be on the look out for are red oak, sweet gum (yes, they grow well in this case, we have one in our parking lot at Color Your World!), Chinese pistachio, Modesto, Bonita, ash Berrinda, Gingko Biloba, Bradford pear, and bald cypress to name a few.
Some other plants that have fall color are Nandina (there are a variety of sizes, shapes and textures of the road you choose), ivy, Euonymus alata (burning bush), Boston Ivy and Virginia Creeper.
Flowering plants appear especially beautiful this time of year, though not necessarily "fall colors" are Mexican sage, lantana, garden mums, marigolds, reeds, Salvia greggii (Cherry Sage), spring of Mexico mealycup salvia, and roses that seem to have more fragrance during this time of year, or maybe it's just my imagination. You decide for yourself.
Do not forget there is a long list of herbs that begins now contributing to falling interest. There is an herb of the Pampas is not too large, so-called 'Ivory Feathers' which is already showing.
Yakushima, miscanthus maiden fountain grass, purple fountain grass, and all the various forms of these herbs are now making their debut. Muhlenbergia Regal 'Mist' one with the "see through" the purple head flowers is about to explode that is colored throughout the city. This seems surprising when the sun shows through it.
Last but certainly No less important are the thoughts, snapdragons, dianthus, and actions. These will give you color even when it snows. Thoughts in particular, can take brief periods of less than 10 degrees F. and still give off color when temperatures climb upward.
If planted now thought should still have the color until next May! Hey Wow! One thing I've noticed over the years is that the thoughts planted in the soil tends to do better than those in pots. If the pot is better has to give some protection from extreme cold to prevent damage in winter. Also, when planting thoughts are best viewed with a mixture good potting which is porous and lightweight. We call fertilome a soil mix that works perfectly Ultimate.
All of the above can be planted in these moments. So get out and enjoy what is probably the best time to be outdoors. Fall!
